What is Prakriti?
In Ayurveda, no two people are treated the same way โ even when they share the same symptom. The reason is Prakriti: your individual constitution, determined at conception and shaped by the balance of three fundamental forces called doshas.
Knowing your Prakriti helps you understand which foods, routines, seasons and even times of day tend to support you โ and which tend to aggravate you.
The three doshas
Vata โ air and ether
Vata governs movement, breath, circulation and nerve impulses. People with a Vata-dominant constitution tend to be light, quick, creative and adaptable. In balance, Vata brings flexibility and enthusiasm. Out of balance, it can show up as anxiety, dryness, irregular digestion, and difficulty sleeping.
Pitta โ fire and water
Pitta governs metabolism, digestion and intellect. Pitta-dominant people tend to be focused, driven, sharp and decisive. In balance, Pitta supports strong digestion and clear thinking. Out of balance, it can show up as inflammation, acidity, irritability and overheating.
Kapha โ water and earth
Kapha governs structure, immunity and lubrication. Kapha-dominant people tend to be calm, steady, patient and physically strong. In balance, Kapha supports endurance and emotional stability. Out of balance, it can show up as heaviness, congestion, sluggish digestion and weight gain.
Most people are not purely one dosha. The classical texts describe dual-dosha constitutions (Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, Vata-Kapha) as the most common, with single-dosha constitutions being less frequent.
Why Prakriti matters
Two people with the same complaint โ say, indigestion โ can need very different approaches. A Vata-dominant person with indigestion may need warming, grounding foods and regular meal timing. A Pitta-dominant person may need cooling foods and reduced intensity. A Kapha-dominant person may need lighter meals and more movement.
This is why Ayurveda places so much emphasis on understanding the individual before treating the symptom.
How to identify your Prakriti
Classical Ayurveda identifies Prakriti through a detailed assessment of physical features, digestion, sleep, energy patterns, emotional tendencies and long-term health history. A qualified Vaidya takes this history in person or via consultation.
Self-assessment quizzes โ like ours โ can give a useful indication of your dominant tendencies, but they are educational tools. They do not replace a practitioner's assessment and should not be used to self-prescribe.
